Our harmonious multilingualism experience

The harmony in our families multilingualism and pluriculturalism is ever evolving. Each one of us adds a unique touch to this beautiful experience. My husband, American born and raised, has worked so hard to pass down his ancestry by means of language and tradition. Considering his first language is English, his and my experience are so different. I love best in my native languages Spanish and Catalan, but
decided to speak to the girls predominantly in Spanish. To me it has meant sharing a side of me that as an immigrant I often carry hidden. Most importantly, seeing our daughters effortlessly interact with our family and their culture has proven so valuable to both of us, and to them. Our daughters know nothing else but a world composed of different languages and traditions and yet, they are able to experience
what makes each unique as much as what we have in common. It is so beautiful to see them understand
that everyone has a story and honor it in its entirety.

When we embarked on the trilingual and pluricultural upbringing of our daughters, we thought it would require a lot of effort, but in retrospect, it has been so natural to our daughters, ourselves and even our extended family. We don’t have grand expectations. We will continue to honor our family and its history and see where that continues to take us.

Sincerely,

Us
